How does ketamine work?
It is believed that ketamine helps shut off and reset synapses that have become deranged in many depressive and pain states. During this process remodeling is done to return the synapses to a normal state of functioning. It is believed that these alterations persist long after ketamine has been metabolized, indicating long term results, while the process begins working in as short as 30-minutes.
Is Ketamine FDA Approved?
The FDA has only approved ketamine for its use in surgical anesthesia. Medical use of ketamine for off-label purposes is deemed appropriate when recommenced by a physician or advanced practice nurse. Several medical centers, including Harvard, Yale, the University of California in San Diego, and the Mayo Clinic have begun offering Ketamine Therapy of off-label mental health and chronic pain conditions.
How Does It Work?
Studies are still being conducted to gain further understanding of ketamine. It is believed that ketamine plays a role in the (N-Methyl- d-aspartic acid or N-Methyl- d-aspartate) NMDA receptor blocking pattern, increasing the levels of glutamate between neuronal synapses. An environment with more optimal healthy pathways are formed and strengthened where they could not be before as a direct result of chronic psychological or pain conditions. Ketamine infusion therapy allows for the brain and neuronal connections to reset, allowing one to be lifted out of their chronic state of despair. People who have lived their entire lives in a state of depression, anxiousness, fear, or pain are finding relief with the use of ketamine, and are beginning to live life again in a profound and meaningful way.
If you or your loved one are suffering, and conventional treatments have not worked, low-dose ketamine infusion therapy may provide the relief you are seeking.
